Speak in tongues

Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 1 Corinthians 14:4

I know this subject has created a lot of misunderstanding in the body of Christ but the word of God remains the Truth even if men struggle to understand and apply it correctly.

The gift of tongues is given to everyone, just as the gift of salvation.

And just like the gift of salvation, not everyone receive it for numerous reasons. Some have seen this gift misused in the church, others don’t believe it is applicable for the church today, some others don’t understand the benefit of it.

Our heavenly Father is a God of order, not of confusion.

How does this gift work ?

Like salvation, this gift relies on a basis of faith. If you don’t believe in your heart that when you speak in tongues, you actually speak to God and no one except him understands you, you will either reject or misuse this gift.

For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 14:2.

Now, the problem is not in the gift, but in your belief system.

Do you believe and receive the word of God with child like faith ?

When we begin to speak in tongues, it sounds strange and we think it’s not God. We only have this impression because our natural mind does not understand what we are saying.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 1 Corinthians 14:14-15

When speaking in tongues ?

In your personal devotion with the Lord! When you talk to the Lord you can talk in tongues.

Someone may say: “Yes but I talk to the Lord all the time in my heart already.”
Yes! and that’s great sister! Keep doing it brother because this is good to always to talk to the Lord in your heart.

But sometimes you will have the need to voice what you want to tell to the Lord.

Sometimes you face hardships or you find yourself in very challenging situations and you need voice those things. We are still in bodies of flesh after all, we are still very sensitive to what’s going on around us.

I would speak in tongues everyday in my personal devotion so I stay in the top of what’s coming against me.

Where speaking in tongues ?

Everywhere that you would have a conversation with someone.

Do you talk to yourself sometimes in public places ? I have a class mate in bible college who talks to himself quite often. When I am next to him, I can hear him mumbling.

Why not ? As long as you are not shouting, disturbing the public order. As long as you are not being hysteric. 🙂

When you speak to God in tongues, you edify yourself.
To edify means to build yourself up.

Personally, I want to built myself up so I can be a blessing for those around me that’s why I speak in tongues everyday on my own, when I walk in the street, etc..

You don’t have to close you eyes to pray in tongues!

Coming from a baptist background, I can tell the difference in the boldness I have now in Christ since I have been disciplined myself with this gift.

In church setting

The scripture is very clear in this area too.

Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying?  You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified. 1 Corinthians 14: 16-17

Why would you loudly pray in tongues in Church if it’s not to edify the church ?

If there is no interpretation of what you prophesied in tongues how can the hearers receive it?

If you can pray in tongues, you can also ask the Lord to give you also the interpretation so at least others can benefit of the blessing that you want to release from the Lord.

More than all of us

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. 1 Corinthians 14:18-19

Paul was speaking in tongues more than all of us but not in the church.

I understand why he had so many revelations and was used so powerfully by the Lord.

He spent a lot of time in prison and I believe that he was building himself up, praising the Lord in the spirit and also in his understanding.

Don’t worry about what such or such people think about speaking in tongues. Have faith in the Lord and you will be blessed.
