Two in one

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 NKJV

Many people do not realise that inside their body, there is a soul and a spirit.
Some even think that we are only flesh and bones.
But it is clear that we are much more than that and the word of God confirms at many places in the bible.
When God created the Adam, we can see there were 2 clear steps:
1st step   => God formed man from the dust of the ground. (Genesis 2:7 NIV)
2nd step => God breathed in his nostrils the breath of life. (Genesis 2:7 NIV)
Then man became a living being.

Contrary to the animals God breathed his spirit in man and this is why we are alive. If we are alive and live and move it’s because of the breath of life that God breathed in our nostrils.

God told us again through Elihu in Job 32:8 NIV – “…But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding…”

Our spirit connects us to the spiritual world. It is the part that enables us to communicate with God.
Our body, (flesh) we all know connects us to the physical world. 
Our soul makes the connection between spirit and body.

Division

Our main scripture tells us that the word of God pierces even to the division of soul and spirit.

When you embrace the word of God, as you keep seeking from truth you become aware that you have a spirit and a soul. The word of God helps you to separate what comes from the spirit and what comes from the soul.

Our soul is the place where we make decisions. This is where our mind, our emotions also reside. Our soul can be either dominated by our flesh (body) or either dominated by our spirit.

The spirit has desires which are opposed to the desires of the flesh. They are opposed between themselves so our soul has to make a decision. We need to choose who we will follow. The tendency of the flesh or the tendency of the spirit.
