Stand firm!
But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his master’s servant and did not go down to his house. 2 Samuel 11:9
Alleluia! I was praying when in tongues yesterday, when the Lord gave me the scripture reference 2 Samuel 11:9. I opened my bible and read the scripture above.
If you don’t know the full story, I would encourage to read the full chapter 11. In short, King David was in his palace, while his army was at war, and he had an affair with one of his soldier’s wife. This woman was called Bathsheba and the soldier (her husband) was called Uriah.
Later, King David found out that Bathsheba was pregnant. David sent a word to his chief commander on the field telling him: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.”
David had secretly planned to give Uriah a day off so he can go home and sleep with his wife. That would covered David’s adultery and Uriah would be the father on this child.
However things did not work as expected because Uriah (not knowing anything) refused to go home and enjoy, drink, food and sex while his fellow soldiers were at war.
Spirit V Flesh
While David was following the desires of the flesh (covetousness, adultery, lies), Uriah was following the desires of the spirit (loyalty, righteousness, full commitment).
Uriah did not know what had happened in his back but he was faithful to what the Spirit of God told him and he literally refused to enjoy the pleasure of life while his brothers were suffering for the country at war. The cause was bigger than his own interests.
Galatians 5:16 says: So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
How many times the Spirit of God will prompt us to stand firm on a position instead of giving in the pleasure of the flesh. It might not seem easy but it is possible to resist the desires of the flesh in order to yield the voice of the spirit.
When you fast food, in order to be more in tune with the Lord, you are actually feeding the spiritual man instead of the natural one. Little victories like this will help to walk more by the spirit and less by the flesh.
Someone can say, but Uriah died. What did it benefit him to not go home? I would answer to this: “Life is not about benefice for me. It’s more: how can my life benefit someone else?”
Your integrity can help someone else
Uriah did not know that his attitude and his death was going to help King David to come back his senses. You might not always see on this earth the benefit on standing firm in the word of God. But rest assured that God who sees everything will reward you in due time.
And more than a reward, he can use your conviction and choices to minister to someone else. Isn’t that great to know that we can be useful in God’s hands to fulfil his purpose.
We can actually be part of his plan, of redeeming humanity by standing in his word and trusting Him.
Uriah is an example for me. He is a type of Jesus. He died because of his relationship with the Lord but his death helped what was lost to come back to God. King David was lost in his natural senses but God loved him so much that he prepared a way out for him.

In typology, I see Uriah as a type of the Law, David as a type of Christ, and Bathsheba as a type of the Bride. Paul says that we were once married to the Law. “For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.” Uriah as a type of the Law, was put to death through the body of Christ, so that we could be married to another, that is, Christ. The death of his son and the mourning of David is a type of Christ’s death, while David arising from the ground, washing, anointing himself and changing his clothes; and coming into the house of Yahweh and worshiping is a type of His resurrection and exaltation to the right hand of God.
